It’s true that sometimes when you’re facing valleys, God places scripture in your day that is exactly what you needed to hear. However, some of the Scripture that has changed me are ones that I’ve found on a regular day in my quiet time with The Lord. Here are some passages and verses that I believe change your perspective and encourage your faith.
The passage that has had the most impact on my life is Matthew 4:1-11, the temptation of Jesus. For those of you that aren’t familiar, in this passage Jesus is in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. He was alone and fasting and the passage even says He was hungry which tells us He was in a humanely position. Satan approaches Him and continuously proposes tempting offers.
Every offer that Satan crafted up, Jesus responded with Scripture, rejecting the temptation. Despite Satan attempting to trick Him with Scripture, Jesus was wise enough to not fall for his trap. What stands out to me the most about this passage is that Jesus faced every single temptation that we have, in an even weaker position than we were. However, Jesus stood faithful, wise, and unshaken. This is so incredible to me because how easily do we face temptation and give in believing we aren’t strong enough. We are! The same Man who faced every temptation and never gave in, is the One you get your strength from.
Pride, gossip, greed, envy, deceit, impurity. Every sin we face and face temptation for, Jesus has defeated. This passage will never lose its wonder to me because when I truly read this and deciphered its meaning, I realized that temptations do not have the power we give them. Every temptation is a lie that leads to destruction. Jesus knew that and therefore He was not shaken despite satan’s consistency. Jesus also knew Scripture, in and out. He was truly wearing the armor of God. How often are you in The Word and learning Scripture to give you wisdom and strength in times of temptation? This passage always encourages me to do exactly that so that in the tough moments, I resemble Jesus’ faithfulness.
There are many other passages that have shaped who I am, convicted me, and encouraged me. However, Matthew 4:1-11 will always be the passage that humbles me because it reminds me that I have a God who faced everything, sees me fail, and still chooses to die for me and love me.
