ROMANTICIZING THE LITTLE THINGS

It's All About The Small Moments

If you’re anything like me then you’re always looking forward to the next exciting event in your life. I remember as a kid I would be so excited for halloween and then as soon as it ended I was thinking about thanksgiving. Or it could be something simpler like as soon as Monday hits you’re thinking about your plans for the next weekend. What I’ve learned is that sometimes the best moments are the small moments.

The 3 Things I'm Grateful For

Since I get so excited about my upcoming plans and think about them so constantly, I’ve found that as soon as they end I feel so sad, sort of like I’m grieving them. I’m still so guilty of this but I’ve also learned to appreciate the little things and I think we need to start doing that more. Spending the night watching TV with my roommate, the flowers my boyfriend bought me, the new coffee I decided to try, a clean room. All of these things are pretty small, sort of normal, but they all bring me such joy!

"Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ."

My roommate and I started doing 75 hard (the easy version of course) and one of the rules we set for ourselves was that every night we have to write down 3 things that we are thankful for, usually from that day. I’ve started to really enjoy that time because for one, it gives me the chance to look back at my day and appreciate the little things. Secondly, it helps me to realize that I’m really grateful for moments that I didn’t really realize in the moment.

I encourage you to start writing down 3 appreciations each night and see how it changes your view of the little moments. It’s not always easy to come up with 3 but as I’m thinking about what I could write I realize I take so much for granted. My safe apartment, my cozy room, my parents’ generosity, the fact that I live with my best friend. These aren’t big, new things but they’re things that I should thank God for because I truly am lucky to experience them.

As I get older I realize that becoming so hyper fixated on big events tends to drain me in a sense. I cannot live my life only looking forward to rare occurrences, I have to be grateful for the little blessings that God has placed into my life. Trust me, once you do, you’ll start to find yourself appreciating the small moments so much more.
